Kamchatka Leaf Warbler
Phylloscopus examinandus
The Kamchatka Leaf Warbler is a small leaf warbler of north-eastern Asia, formerly part of the Arctic Warbler complex but recognised as a separate species since the 2010s on genetic and vocal evidence. It breeds on Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands and winters in Indonesia and the Philippines. It is almost identical to the Arctic Warbler, and its song is needed for certain identification.
Did you know?
- It was formerly treated as the same species as both the Arctic and Japanese Leaf Warblers.
- Its species name examinandus means “to be examined”, reflecting how hard it is to identify.
